Color photography is dandy, no doubt about it, but black
and white…ah, there’s an artist’s medium. When not distracted by every
loudly shouting tint and hue, there’s a lovely and restful quiet as shapes
and spaces emerge, contrasts are strengthened, subtleties of emotion are
evoked and the real magic happens. This calendar features twelve duotone
works by Markus Hartel, Noah Bucher, Dan Heller, Mike Fitelson, Stephen
Spinder and Paul Rider, all of the urban landscape but each quite
individual, with accompanying quotes from favorite Llewellyn writers.
The photography is stunning, and I truly appreciate that
the quotes chosen are spiritual in nature but are not particularly “witchy”,
allowing the calendar to appeal to a broader audience. This one will
grace any wall and would be an excellent gift for virtually anyone, Pagan
or not. Holidays and moon quarters are noted in blocks large enough to
accommodate lots of appointments and notes. My only criticism is that I
would prefer the artists be credited below the photo or page, rather than
sharing space on the back page with the other incidentals. I hope this
calendar joins the Astrological, Witches’, and other Llewellyn calendar
favorites to becomes an annual event.
An enthusiastic five pentacles out of five.
